Free Inquiry Reflection #10 – The Road Home

What?

This is my final painting for this inquiry project. As I mentioned in my last post, I wanted to challenge myself by not looking at a prior watercolour painting for inspiration, rather heading into the outdoors and creating myself. In saying this I am home for thanksgiving weekend, and I thought there was no better way than to connect my last painting to back home. I decided I would make it even more personal and create a piece of the road home to my house. This road holds a special place in my heart. It is an absolute beautiful spot out in the country of Port Alberni and when I travel down the road, I know I am going to meet my loved ones at the end.

So What?

I Learnt:

  • The importance of perception. Especially in this image to show large sized images at the front compared to the back to show what is need to road verses far away.
  • The importance of deciding what layers of paint need to go down first before others so they do not ruin the layers on top. For example, I had to do the mountains before I was able to complete the trees and houses.

My Struggles:

  • I had a difficult time making my houses look three dimensional.
  • I also struggled with finding an appropriate size for the trees to make them look realistic. Looking back, I believe I may have made them a bit too tall.

My Strengths:

  • I am happy with how the grass looks with the diverse colours and stroke lines.
  • I also am quite happy with how. the sky turned out. Although it was some trial and error with the colour contrast, I am very happy with the finished product.

Now What?

I am actually kind of sad this inquiry project has come to an end. I have enjoyed figuring out how I wanted to display this project on the word press software, what skills I wanted to learn in watercolour painting and what images I was going to attempt to create. I have decided moving forward I am going to continue my watercolour journey as I had fun playing with my creativity when still being relaxed doing it! I look forward to seeing where I can take this throughout my life.
