Free Inquiry Reflection #4 – Into the Wilderness

What?
This scenery piece is now my forth piece although my first piece where I have used the entire page. The video I attached in my last post was super helpful in making smooth backgrounds and as this is mostly smooth background other then the trees, it was super applicable to my piece. In this youtube video the lady explains how putting masking tape around the edges of your paper can be super helpful as it helps your paper from folding up on the edges. She also mentions how important the concept of speed is to keep the background in looking cohesive. Lastly she adds a point on the value of prepping enough mixed paint, as it is so difficult to find the exact paint to water ratio again. I ran into this problem in my last piece and was happy to hear about this tip. This peice is inspired once again from Pintrest, where I searched ‘water colour ideas easy with backgrounds’ and found this beautiful scenery piece. Overall, I really enjoyed painting a full image although I feel I enjoy the small intricate work more.
Now What?
I Learnt:
- The importance of prepping enough mixed paint.
- How important speed is, as watercolour paint drys quite quickly.
My Struggles:
- I had difficulty painting the mountains as I had done the trees first so I was trying to get in the cracks of the branches. If I was to do something similar to this again, I would make sure to do all backdrops first and then place the trees on top.
- I also had a hard time with pressing down too hard when painting the mountains which ended up pilling some of the paper.
My Strengths:
- I am quite happy with how my sky sunset turned out and I feel all the colours thread together really nicely. I think the reason for this may have been the fact that I used the same base colour for each shade in the sky.
- I also am proud of how smooth the grass looks in my image. This is because I was quite fast as I painted this section (like what I learnt from the video).
So What?
Moving forward, I would like to do more card style paintings. I am choosing to do this because I believe this is something I can carry forward with me, whether it is making birthday, thank you, or congratulation cards. I am going to continue to apply the various concepts I have learnt from each of the videos above. I do not have a video to watch for this post and I want to continue to improve each of the skills I have learned up to this point, without adding more skills as of right now.
