What?
What?
During our class on October 16th, we discussed the importance of incorporating multimedia into our learning strategies. We talked about multimedia, multimedia learning and multimedia instructions. We then discussed intrinsic load (sequence and scaffold the material), extraneous load (remove clutter, integrated text and visuals) and germane load (encourage deep processing and schema construction). We had a conversation about when graphics and images are important in our teaching practice. Some points classmates mentioned where how creating examples are important to motivate students, the aspect of making platforms visual and appealing and the aspect of pulling objects into the classroom from the outside world. These examples make learning more well-rounded and meaningful.
So What?
It is important for us as educators to create various forms of visual and auditory learning as each student will grasp and absorb different forms of information. Often in elementary school visual aspects are important as many students do not yet understand written text. Children are also drawn towards colours as it can help group different information to make more sense for many children. Video can also be a great resource for teachers to incorporate into their classrooms. Many kids get very excited and motivated when they get to watch a video or movie in the classroom (often times they do not realize they are learning through this). Videos are great because we as educators can review, stop and rewatch a video to emphasize on important aspects of the video. Another great motivator is getting students to create their own videos to demonstrate their learning. Also we as educators can create our own videos to educator our students. We can use slow motion, time lapse, simulations, 360 views, and GIFs to expand our kids learning.
Now What?
Moving forward into becoming a future teacher I will incorporate visual and auditory aspects into my lessons to broaden students understanding. I will use platforms such as PowerPoint, Canva or edwordle to create resources. These platforms are great because they are completely customizable and for the most have many free aspects. Through PowerPoint we can use SmartArt and 3D models to add to our presentations and make it more interactive and exciting for our students. I will make sure as I move towards my career that I have clear, concise and engaging lessons for my students and recognize my approaches might have to be changed depending on the group of students.
